Why Headliners Sag (and Why Re-Gluing Alone Doesn't Work)

Most factory headliners use foam-backed fabric, and that foam backing is the part that fails first. Years of heat and humidity break the foam down until it turns to powder, so the fabric separates from the vehicle's roof board and droops. 

A sagging headliner often starts as a small bubble or a loose corner, then spreads across the roof. Spraying fresh glue over the old material rarely holds, because it sticks to crumbling foam instead of a clean surface. How to Replace a Car Headliner (DIY Overview)

Replacing a headliner is a patient afternoon, not a hard job. Starting inside, remove the trim, visors, dome light, and grab handles, then take the headliner board out of the vehicle. Strip the old fabric off and remove every bit of deteriorated foam until the board is clean. Lay your new headliner fabric over the board, apply adhesive to one half first, and smooth it from the center out so you avoid creases. Repeat on the other half, cut the excess away, then reinstall the board and refit the parts and trim you remove. What Adhesive to Use for Headliner Fabric

The bond is only as good as the glue, so reach for a high-temp spray adhesive rated for your vehicle's interior. Standard craft glue softens when the vehicle roof heats up in summer and lets the fabric release, which is how a re-glued headliner starts sagging again.

Choosing the Right Headliner Fabric

Foam-Backed Knit (the OEM Replacement)

Foam-backed knit is the material most factory automotive headliners started with, which makes it the natural option for a stock interior. Our Silver Lining headliner fabric runs 60 inches wide with 3/16 inch foam backing, so it drapes cleanly, hides flaws in the board, and stretches to enhance the fit around curves. It's sold by the yard, and most cars need 2 to 3 yards when replacing the roof panel; larger SUVs and vans need more. 

The color range runs from light naturals, sand, parchment, and adobe, through grays, graphite, ox gray, and steel gray, plus black and pearl-toned Aura Pearl. That spread of color lets you match any factory headliner or restyle the roof. A headliner sample card is sold separately to find and compare each color before you cut.

Suede and Vinyl Headliner Options

Not every build wants a knit finish. Suede and microsuede give a car interior a soft, upscale look and enhance the feel of custom cars. Vinyl headliner material goes the other way: it's moisture-resistant and wipes clean, which makes it the option for Jeeps, convertibles, boats, and any automobile with an open interior.

Because vinyl repels dust and resists heat and weather, it holds up where a knit headliner would struggle. Think about where the vehicle lives and how the roof is used, then pick the material and color that fit.

Smoothing Out Creases and Wrinkles

Shipping is the one place creases show up. To fit a box, headliner fabric ships folded, so a fresh piece can arrive with a few wrinkles. They come out easily, so don't worry. Lay a thin cotton t-shirt over the wrinkled area and pass a warm iron over it lightly, or steam it, and the creases relax. Don't press a hot iron onto the face of the material. 

For cleaning, wipe with a damp cloth, avoid harsh chemicals, and never spray a cleaner directly onto an installed headliner in the vehicle, since too much moisture can loosen the adhesive and bring the sag back.
