18oz Vinyl Coated Polyester

Vinyl coated polyester fabric combines a woven polyester scrim with a PVC vinyl coating applied to both sides. This construction creates a material that offers the strength of polyester along with the waterproof protection and durability of vinyl coated polyester.

The polyester core contributes high tensile performance and strong tear strengths, while the vinyl coated surface helps resist moisture, dirt, UV rays, and daily wear. Because of this balance of flexibility and durability, vinyl coated polyester fabric is widely used for transportation, marine, industrial, and outdoor applications.

You may also see it referred to as PVC coated polyester fabric or coated polyester fabric. Regardless of the terminology, it remains one of the most trusted materials for projects that require long-term outdoor performance.

How the 18 oz Weight Compares to Lighter Vinyl Fabrics

The 18 oz designation refers to the weight of the fabric per square yard rather than its thickness. Most 18 oz vinyl coated polyester fabric measures approximately 20 mil thick, though specifications can vary slightly by manufacturer.

Compared to lighter materials such as 13 oz or 14 oz vinyl fabric, 18 oz products offer improved puncture resistance, abrasion resistance, and tear strength. This makes them a better fit for truck tarps, equipment covers, marine protection, and other demanding applications.

While lighter materials are often used for banners and temporary coverings, 18 oz vinyl coated polyester fabric provides the durability needed for long-term outdoor use. For many customers, it offers a practical balance between flexibility, weight, and rugged performance.

Common Uses for 18 oz Vinyl Coated Polyester

One reason vinyl coated polyester remains so popular is its versatility. This heavy-duty fabric performs well across transportation, marine, agricultural, construction, and manufacturing environments.

Professional fabricators value its reliability and long service life, while DIY customers appreciate its ability to withstand weather and repeated use. Unlike materials intended for interior applications, 18 oz vinyl coated polyester fabric is designed to handle moisture, sun exposure, abrasion, and frequent handling.

Truck Tarps and Flatbed Cargo Covers

Trucking companies and owner-operators frequently use 18 oz vinyl coated polyester tarp material because it offers dependable protection during transport. Cargo covers must withstand wind, rain, road debris, and constant movement, making durability a priority.

The material provides strong tear resistance, waterproof protection, and flexibility across changing temperatures. It helps protect loads from moisture and UV rays while maintaining performance through daily use.

Marine Covers, Boat Tarps, and Dock Equipment

Marine environments are particularly demanding due to constant exposure to moisture, sunlight, and changing weather conditions. Vinyl coated polyester fabric is designed to perform in these conditions while maintaining flexibility and durability.

Many fabricators use this material for boat covers, dock enclosures, protective tarps, and equipment storage applications. Waterproof construction, mildew resistance, and fungicidal protection help extend the life of the finished product.

For seating and interior boat projects, customers often pair these materials with our marine vinyl fabric selection, which is designed specifically for marine upholstery applications.

Industrial Covers, Curtains, and Equipment Protection

Industrial facilities often require materials capable of protecting equipment and creating barriers between work areas. This is where heavy-duty vinyl coated polyester excels.

Common applications include welding curtains, machine covers, containment systems, storage protection, and weather barriers. The material's resistance to moisture, abrasion, and UV exposure helps it maintain performance in demanding environments.

Projects that require additional support materials often benefit from products found in our upholstery supplies collection, including adhesives, tools, and accessories commonly used during fabrication.
